Day Trips to Winnett, MT

Trips from Lewistown or Billings here! Scroll down and find yours!
Mountains to the Prairie Daytrip
From Lewistown, MT to Winnett, MT and back.
  • Grab a morning coffee and pastry from Rising Trout, on Main Street in Lewistown MT.
  • Head East up and over the pass between the Snowy & Judith Mountains.
  • Grab a refill if you need it, or just a rest room break and peruse the goods at the Old Merc in Grass Range, Montana.
  • Roll on east past Teigen and the Old Teigen hotel.
  • You'll see the Rims behind Winnett before you can see the town - you're almost there!
  • Roll into Winnett - you'll be greeted by the historic grain elevator. The railroad used to pass through Winnett and this is where the local wheat and barley was loaded on the trains.
  • Can you see the W up on the hill? Each year, the graduating class climbs the rims and changes the year and white-washes the W.
  • Is it brunch or lunch time already? Grab food at the Winnett Bar and Grill - open for breakfast at 10am and serving lunch, dinner, and drinks until close! Locally made pizza, amazing burgers, loaded salads, and gluten free options all here.

You have a few options, depending on the season and what you are into!
  • Take the self-guided Walking Tour  around town! Old West shops, tales of fires and houses of ill repute.
  • Visit the local history displays at the Petroleum County Community Center.
  • History Buffs: visit the history files at the Petroleum County Library (limited summer hours - call ahead!)
  • If it's summer - go take a dip in our awesome local city pool! It's at the west end of main street, bring a little cash to get in.
  • Got kids? Grab to-go meals and let them play at the local park before or after the walking tour.
  • You could cruise out to Petrolia Lake to scope out the campground and fishing for a longer visit next time.

Heading Home:
  • In a rush? Drive home the same way you came, now that you know a little big more about Winnett & Petroleum County.
  • Have a little extra time? Go north at Grass Range until you come to Bohemian Corner, and drive back to Lewistown through Roy, around the north side of the Judith Mountains. You'll have great views of Black Butte and Judith Peak (which has a road to the top!).
  • Stayed too late and don't want to drive home in the dark? See if the local Northern Motel has rooms for the night (or check our local Air BNB's) and finish up with some drinks and dinner at the Winnett Bar, enjoy some stargazing, and head home in the morning.
